Wood Veneer FAQ

What is wood veneer?

Wood veneer is a thin sheet of natural wood (often called a veneer sheet) obtained from a log and then used to cover a substrate (e.g., panel, door, furniture) in order to provide the appearance and feel of a genuine wood species.

It is a solution particularly valued because it combines authenticity, stability, and efficient use of natural resources: it enhances the beauty of wood while allowing greater control over the performance of the finished product.

Solid wood is a thick piece of wood used as is (board, solid panel), whereas veneer is a thin sheet of wood applied to a substrate such as MDF or plywood.

In practice, solid wood provides a full and substantial material, while veneer allows the same visual result (grain, color, species) with greater dimensional stability and better consistency of layout across large surfaces. The right choice depends on the type of project, the intended use, and the desired effect.

Yes. Like any natural wood material, veneer reacts to variations in humidity and temperature. If exposed to an environment that is too dry or too humid, it may contract or expand.

To reduce the risk of cracking or checking during installation, veneer sheets should be stored in a stable environment with controlled temperature for at least 24 hours before application. Proper acclimatization allows the wood to balance with its surroundings and helps ensure a more stable final result.

Wood veneer is generally about 0.5 mm thick, although different thicknesses can exist depending on manufacturers and applications.

At Bois Lamica, our veneer sheets are primarily offered in 0.5 mm, a thickness that preserves the richness of the natural grain while ensuring excellent stability and a consistent layout of the sheets. Slight variations may occur depending on the wood species and the type of cut.

Yes, this is precisely what gives natural wood veneer its beauty. Grain, color, knots, and movement vary from sheet to sheet, because every tree is unique.

To achieve a harmonious result, the layout of the sheets (matching) is carefully planned to create a coherent visual flow. For each project, veneer samples and lots can also be selected to reflect the natural variation expected for the final application.

Wood Species and Customization

Do you offer custom solutions?

Yes. Since every project is unique, we can adapt our veneer sheets to your specific needs, whether in terms of wood species, cut type, sequence, or format.

We regularly work from precise and technically demanding requests. Feel free to share the details of your project so we can guide you toward the most suitable solution.

Yes. The species presented on our website represent a selection of our most common options, but we have access to a much wider range.

Depending on log availability and the needs of your project, it is possible to source specific wood species, whether domestic or exotic. If you have a particular species in mind, feel free to contact us so we can confirm its availability and feasibility.

Yes. We offer different cut types depending on the selected wood species and the desired visual effect. Our veneers are mainly available in flat cut (sliced), quarter cut, and rift cut, each highlighting the wood grain in a distinct way.

We do not perform the cutting of logs ourselves and do not offer rotary-cut veneer. However, we carefully select the sheets to ensure a visual consistency suited to your project.

Absolutely. The matching types of veneer sheets plays a key role in the final appearance of a project.

We can guide you through different veneer matching techniques and composition approaches to ensure visual consistency suited to the space and the scale of the project. A well-planned matching highlights the natural grain while maintaining a harmonious reading of the surfaces.

Yes. Veneer grading refers to certain aesthetic criteria such as the presence of knots, color variations, or other natural wood characteristics.

Depending on the type of project, the selection can be oriented toward a more uniform grade or, on the contrary, toward a more natural and expressive appearance. We can guide you in choosing the grade that best matches your visual expectations. For more information about our veneer grades, feel free to contact us directly.

Production and Technical Information

What are the maximum dimensions available?

Our spliced veneer sheets can reach up to 147 inches in length by 62 inches in width when produced with the grain. In cross grain, dimensions can reach 62 inches by 147 inches, depending on the project and the selected wood species.

These large formats help ensure visual continuity across wide surfaces while reducing the number of visible joints. For more details on common formats, available dimensions, general thickness and grain direction, see our page on wood veneer sheets for professionals.

Our production lead times are generally short, but they may vary depending on order volume, the selected wood species, and the complexity of the project. For an accurate and up-to-date estimate, we recommend contacting us directly with the details of your request.

Yes. We regularly work from plans or technical specifications to ensure production aligned with the precise needs of a project.

Whether for specific dimensions, a particular sequence, or visual continuity requirements, working with blueprints allows us to optimize the matching of veneer sheets and ensure a consistent and coherent final result.

No. Our veneer sheets do not come with a backing. We supply spliced natural wood veneer sheets only, without an integrated substrate.

They are intended to be applied using the methods and processes specific to each workshop or manufacturer. For more information on veneer sheets without backing, available formats and professional applications, see our page on wood veneer sheets for professionals.

No. We do not provide veneer pressing on panels. Our specialty is splicing and preparing veneer sheets according to the required dimensions and matching. The pressing and application onto panels are carried out by other professionals, using their own processes and equipment.
